Verification

Wholesale manifest verification: what to check before you buy

A wholesale manifest is the contract between what you think you are buying and what arrives at your dock. In liquidation and off-price sourcing, manifest quality separates professional buyers from speculators. This guide walks through the verification checklist U.S. resellers, retailers, and export buyers use before funding a lot on Pallet or anywhere else.

What a real manifest includes

Every row on a professional wholesale manifest should answer four questions:

Summary-only manifests (“10,000 units apparel, mixed brands”) are marketing sheets, not manifests.

Five verification checks that catch 90% of problems

1. SKU density and duplicates

Export the file and scan for duplicate SKUs, blank rows, and “MISC” line items. High misc share usually means the seller could not identify inventory, a red flag for export and marketplace resale.

2. MSRP sanity

Spot-check 10–20 high-value SKUs against current retail. Inflated MSRP is the oldest trick in liquidation. If MSRP drives your bid, validate it.

3. Condition language

“Customer returns” and “salvage” are not interchangeable. Map condition codes to your refurbishment cost: returns may need QC and repack; salvage may be parts-only.

4. Channel restrictions

Read resale terms before you model margin. Blocks on Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.com are standard on branded liquidation. On Pallet, channel controls are attached to the lot record and enforced contractually against the buyer of record.

5. Logistics reality

Confirm pallet count, weight, pickup ZIP, and whether pricing is FOB or delivered. A great manifest with bad freight math still loses money.

On Pallet, every open lot ships with manifest access for verified buyers, plus escrow release tied to delivery confirmation, not broker promises.

When to walk away

Pass on the lot if the seller will not share a manifest pre-offer, if condition codes are undefined, if channel terms are “to be determined,” or if pickup details change after you fund. Professional sellers on structured networks rarely behave this way because verification is part of the product.

How long verification should take

Experienced buyers budget 30–90 minutes for a mid-size lot. That time is cheaper than a single mis-manifested truckload sitting in your warehouse.

What is a wholesale manifest?

A line-item inventory list with SKU identifiers, quantities, condition grades, and MSRP or retail values per unit, attached to a liquidation or off-price lot.

Why do channel restrictions matter?

Brands often block Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.com resale. Violations can suspend marketplace accounts and breach your purchase agreement.

How long should manifest verification take?

Most buyers spend 30–90 minutes exporting, spot-checking SKUs, validating MSRP, and confirming logistics before funding.
